DAYCARE AND CHILDCARE SPACES

We are often asked about daycare spaces in the City. When I moved to Port Moody in 2013, I was pregnant with my second child and hopeful that we would have better luck here than we had in East Van in securing daycare spots. Almost immediately, we found a wonderful daycare for both our kids just a block away from our home (unlicensed) thanks to a sign on their lawn, and after a couple of years, our two girls moved on to Glenayre Montessori on the grounds of the elementary school they would eventually attend.
I know the difficulty in finding spaces is ongoing, and have the following stats to provide:
January 2018: 1,194 spots (range of types, see stats in pic below from Fraser Health)

January 2026: 1,650 spots (see same pic above)
PLUS Moody Elementary spots as follows:
- YMCA age 3-5 program with before and after care coming very soon (# spots unknown but I will update here)
- City-run after-school programs run 4 days a week
Total - Close to 1,700 licensed spots exist currently.

Unlicensed spots (difficult to quantify)
Development pipeline: 4 projects with a total of 181 new spaces coming
Spots that go straight to building permit and licensing (i.e. not a new development) including, but not limited to:
- 84 Moody Street - requested a variance in 2025 for a two story childcare building with a total of 82 spots for children aged infant to 5 years old, hopefully coming this year.
- St. Johns/Hugh Street - operator has requested a Temporary Use Permit for a daycare with 48 spots (24 infant/toddler and 24 group daycare 3-5 years). They are hoping for a June 2026 open.
This Council is also considering its own daycare at the Rec Centre which is not included in the above. In all, it's tough to give an exact number of daycare spaces, and these are only to the best of my knowledge with assistance from staff in mining the data we have.
This Council recognizes the importance of adequate daycare spots as we grow, and we will continue to push for additional spots as we grow.
